of Perivoli,
known
in Greece as the community with the largest forest covered area by 80%,
but even more known from its own natural diamond - Valia
Calda(National Park).
The village
Perivoli is located
among Vasilitsa(an area listed in NATURA 2000) and Lygos.It is easily
reached
because the entire road from Grevena to Perivoli is turnpike.
TODAY'S
IDENTITY
The settlement of
Perivoli,
one of the most important resorts of Pindos, is build on the eastern
slopes
of the homonymous mountain chain, at the bounds of Macedonia - Epiros,
at an altitude of 1350 meters. It is the county seat of the same-named
Community and administratively comes under the Prefectural
Sesf-Administration
of Grevena. The population, according to the recent muster roll is 440
people. The administrative area of the Community covers about 450,000
sq.meters.
The relief of the area is characterised by rich biovariety. To
the
administrative boundary of the Community belongs the National Park of
Pindos
«VALIA CALDA». The residents are mainly
occupied
with cattle-breeding and woodcutting. Traditional cheese products are
made
from goat-sheep's milk like feta,hard cheese, butter and cream-cheese.
Of excellent quality is also the timber of the area. The last years
eco-tourism
is developed. Starting from the end of June till mid September, the
Perivolian
"Dispersion" returns home and the village turns into a small
town._

Valia Calda
was rescued
thanks to the love of the local cattle-breeders and woodcutters mostly
and also all the residents of Perivoli.

100% of Valia Calda's land belongs to the administratine
bounds
of the Perivoli Community.
The National Park
"Valia Calda"
was created in 1966, to protect the few bears, wolves, wild-goats,
trouts
and age-long blackpines and robola, many of which are over 700 years of
age, after actions and promts from the Forest-friend Union of Athens.
 Its
core has a plottage of 33.600 sq.meters, constists of the
valley
of Valia Calda(at 1.200 m.) and the slopes of the around peaks Flega(2.159
m.), Aftia (2.082 m.), Avgo
(2.177
m.).
The Park sits
at the boundary
of West Macedonia and Epiros, at the south of village Perivoli of
Grevena.
Inside the Park
have their
fountainheads three small rivers, Valia Calda, Flega and Bearstream,
which
together create river Aoos. The beauty of the area is underlined by
three
small lakes, the two lakes of Flega at an altitude of 1.900 m. and
Lakkos
at 1.600 m.

Among the woods of
blackpine
are scatteringly found some macedonian spruces (Abies borisii-regis),
redpines(
ç äáóéêÞ ðåýêç- Pinus sylvestris ) and robola. In Valia Calda there are
about forty scattered redpines. The presence of this kind in the Park
has
great
ecological value, because it is its southest spreading point in the
entire Balkan Peninsula and the only on the mountain chain of Pindos.

P L A N T S (the
flowers of Valia Calda)
 In
the National Park exist many plants,endemic species of the Balkans,
Greece,
Albania, W.Macedonia and of northeastern Pindos. Among them the
Minuartia
baldacii, Lillium albanicum, Viola dukadjinica, Campanula hawkinsiana
and
Centaurea vlachorum, the endemic plant of the park, which was named
vlachorum
in honor of the Bumpkins(Vlachoi) who live in the around villages.

In Valia Calda
nest more
than 80 species of birds.The ornithological value of the area is
pointed
by the presence of 11 raptor's species. Between them the goldeagle, the
bird of prey, the "asproparis",the snake-eagle,the double-sparrow hawk,
the sparrow hawk, the goldenhawk, "pontikovarvakina" and other.
Furthermore,
in the Park nest 8 species of woodpeckers, out of the 10
species
that nest in the western Palaearctic(including the most rare
"mavrotsiklitara","pardalotsiklitara","prasinotsiklitara"
et.c. Among the conifers and beeches, many struthious-like birds find
shelter,
like tits, finches, orioles, "piroules", "stavromites".In the alpic
grasslands
nests the typical for the alpic zone specie, "xionada"(Eremophila
alpestris),
a specie of great zoologic-geographic value.

Valia Calda is one
of the most
important areas of the country as a biotope of the bear. Other unique
mammals
or this area are the wolf,the "vidra",the wildgoat, the roe deer and
the
wildcat.

greek-frog,the
"vomvini", the triton a.o.) and in reptiles (like the water
snake,
the greenlizard, the wall-lizard a.o.) |
Perivoli is
famous about
its cattle-breed products made by its residents themselves but also
about
its cool natural water of its springs.
Thereby, any
restaurant or tavern
of Perivoli you choose to go, one thing is certain. You will eat well
and
cheaply. Local mountain veals, sheeps, goats, cheese products, frumenty
and home noodles made by pure materials, as also traditional recipes of
pies and other dishes. We recommend you to taste the unique local
nettlepie.
